Doing the little things right. The Lymphoedema Training Academy has built a reputation for being a pioneer of Fluoroscopy Guided Manual Lymphatic Draining training (FG-MLD®) mainly derived from the importance of how ICG imaging has changed the landscape of many things lymphatic and lymphoedema.
Through the work and research at LymphVision, and from presenting many abstracts at conferences in multiple countries, over the last decade, it has ultimately changed our thought process on what compromises as a comprehensive lymphoedema treatment protocol. (Of course, it’s not only us, there are other pioneers who started the early work with ICG imaging Jean-Paul Belgrado).
However, the message has to be “we are more than MLD”. The fact that our main training has been called ‘The Lymphoedema Rehabilitation Programme’ for over a decade demonstrates how MLD forms only one component of a whole process of the treatment necessary for changing the course of lymphoedema management, treatment and outcomes. As an example, in the few next month’s we have our Lymphoedema Rehabilitation Training (for health care professionals), Lymphoedema Management for Manual therapists (mainly private therapists), Kinesio taping for lymphoedema, An integrated approach to Chronic Wounds and lymphoedema; teaming up with julie stanton of Pioneer; Our new Scar Tissue therapy training, where we have teamed up with Hannah Poulton, our Specialist Lipoedema Management Training, Laughter Yoga and Turnabout; because a collaborative approach to rehabilitation is paramount to improving outcomes.
You may have heard of the ‘compound effect?’ Every component, done correctly, at its highest level, improves and amplifies the next process or outcome. I want everyone we teach to perform at the highest level, at their absolute best, of what they learnt. To not drop the standard, to ensure we achieve the best outcome because that is how we help people the most.
It’s why adding components of care, such as how to ‘up’ our bandaging skills by adding KT and foams, will heal wounds faster. How managing scars and cording, alongside lymphoedema, will enhance MLD and exercise programmes and have that compound effect.
It’s why ‘laughter’ is the best medicine to help you and your patients with mindset and concordance. It’s how our ‘turnabout’ training does just that - helps to turnabout mindset because Lymphoedema Rehabilitation, is not just one component of care.
Rehabilitation addresses the physical, psychological, spiritual, social and general wellbeing, that allows for total rehabilitation of lymphoedema (and other chronic illnesses), because like our mission statement ‘People living with lymphatic conditions deserve better’.
Now… what will be your next building block to enhance the lives of those living with lymphoedema and chronic oedema?
