The Lymphoedema Management for Manual Therapists (LMMT) course is designed for Level 3 qualified Manual Therapists and above who wish to develop their understanding of the lymphatic system and gain the knowledge and practical skills required to safely support clients with the intervention of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) for lymphoedema.

The course provides a clear understanding of the role of manual therapy within lymphoedema care, enabling you to work safely within your professional scope of practice. Successful completion of this course will allow you to:

• Recognise lymphoedema 

• Understand the assessment principles and re-assess previously diagnosed clients

• Understand indications and contraindications for MLD

• Create a bespoke MLD treatment plan

• Carry out MLD

• Support clients in implementing self-management 

• Provide advice on exercise, skincare and lifestyle for those with lymphoedema​

• Work with other healthcare providers to support patients

​As with all LTA courses, equal importance is placed on both practical skills and theoretical understanding, ensuring you are confident in applying your learning safely in practice.​

This course delivers an overview for Manual Therapists in supporting those with lymphoedema through Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

This course will cover:

• Recognising lymphoedema and differential diagnosis​

• Lymphatic anatomy and physiology

• The history of MLD and its evolution

• Understanding lymphofluoroscopy in lymphoedema management

• Lymphatic pathways of the upper and lower limbs

• FG-MLD of the upper and lower limbs

• Indications and contraindications of MLD

• Supported self-management techniques including self/simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD)

• Professional guidance on developing clinical practice

To support the foundation of your Lymphoedema MLD training with LTA, this course includes an overview and introduction to:

• Reassessment of oedema

• Exercise and movement

• Skincare

• Risk reduction

• Innovations in lymphoedema care including photobiomodulation (PBM) and Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC)

On completion you will gain a certificate in Manual Lymphatic Drainage (FG-MLD) of the Upper & Lower Limbs for Manual Therapists.​​

This training is suitable for body workers, manual therapists, and massage therapists who hold a full Level 3 Diploma in 'body massage', 'sports massage' or similar, which included at least 350 guided learning hours (GLH) and hands-on practical study/practice.

Certificates not accepted for entry to this course include short courses, online-only courses, one/two day courses, some areas of study and some certificate titles. 

​

We welcome therapists on this course who are DLT/CDT trained with the other recognised schools of MLD (Vodder, Földi, Casley-Smith) and would like to learn the FG-MLD ('Fill & Flush') method.

In-person Training
Our in-person sessions will put your online learning into practice. They focus on practical clinical skills like assessment and treatment techniques, which require hands-on learning and interaction.

Practical sessions at our LTA HQ in Stafford (UK) include:

• A separate practical skills space with couches, equipment, and consumables for hands-on practice

These sessions provide the opportunity to develop and apply your skills under the guidance of LTA's experienced Trainers.

In-person training is an essential part of all LTA courses. We consider hands-on learning to be intrinsic to developing safe and effective clinical skills, particularly where accuracy and clinical judgement rely on practical experience, which we feel cannot be taught online alone.
​
Our in-person sessions help build your confidence in your practical skills with opportunity for hands-on practice, supported by guidance and feedback from experienced Trainers, so that you can be assured you are doing the right thing for your clients. 

​This course comprises of a total of five scheduled days, split into online and in-person sessions.

Online Learning
Two days of online learning, usually delivered as one day per week over two consecutive weeks. This will consist of a live session in the morning and protected study time, group work, research and pre recorded sessions in the afternoon.
​
These sessions provide the theoretical foundation for the course and are supported by additional self-directed learning. You should allow time between sessions for reading, reflection, and independent study.
​​
In-person Training
Three days of in-person training, usually delivered as one block of three consecutive days.
​
A gap of approximately 2–4 weeks is scheduled between online and in-person, allowing time for self-study, skills practice, consolidation of learning, and completion of any course-related activities.
​
This structure is designed to give you time to absorb and apply your learning, while maintaining momentum throughout the training.
 
You will also need to find time for self study.

This course has a total study time of 90 hours, consisting of 50 hours of directed self study and pre-course reading, 16 hours of online live lectures and 24 hours in-person classroom workshops.

At LTA Education, we understand that staying current with your training is essential to your success as a therapist. That's why we offer recertification training for all of our therapists to ensure that you maintain the skills and knowledge you need to provide the best possible care for your patients.

Once you have successfully obtained your initial training certification, it is essential to attend a 1-day recertification training after the first 12 months, followed by subsequent trainings every 2 years to uphold your certification.
